While the story of the 2010 Super Bowl odds will be the two offenses on the field, the defense that can do the best job to slow down the other’s prolific offense will likely have a great chance to win. Here is a review of the two defenses and who has the edge.
Defensive Line
While some people might have a tough time arguing against the Saints defensive line after they throttled Brett Favre in the NFC Championship Game, the Colts still have the better overall unit.
The Colts boast two Pro Bowl defensive ends in Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney. These guys are two of the best in the business and in a passing-oriented game, they could have a huge impact.
Pick: Colts
Linebackers
This matchup is a little closer as the Saints have the best overall linebacker on the field in Pro Bowler Jonathan Vilma but as a trio, the edge goes to the Colts.
Clint Session is an up-and-coming playmaker and Gary Brackett is as solid as it gets for the Colts. Meanwhile, the Saints have Scott Shanle and Scott Fujita flanking Vilma and those guys are just mediocre.
Pick: Colts
Secondary
While the Colts hold the edge in the other levels, the Saints have the edge in the secondary.
With Darren Sharper and Roman Harper, the Saints have two Pro Bowl safeties. Beyond that, their cornerbacks are superior to the Colts and they have an edge there.
Pick: SaintsOverall, these two units are both decent but both will likely get lit up on Super Bowl Sunday. The Colts unit is a bit better overall so look for that to be the difference.
